Library Policy

Parent/Student BECS Library Policy Agreement

Philosophy

The instructional role of Bromley East Charter School Library is to teach students to make wise choices in an informational environment using the BECS way. Formal introduction to library and information literacy skills take place during the required Library Lesson curriculum. However, since information use is best taught in context, library use instruction is integrated throughout the curriculum and the Library welcomes and encourages collaboration with teachers.

Patron Conduct Policy

In order to maintain a library environment, which supports Bromley East Charter School community’s educational, emotional, and recreational needs, the following patron conduct is expected.

• The library’s mission is to ensure equal access of materials to all students, parents, and teachers. Therefore, theft in any form will not be tolerated.

• The library attempts to foster an atmosphere conductive to study and research. Towards this aim, the library has created different areas of quiet study to accommodate its patrons’ various needs.

Conduct in the library will be as follows:

• In the library, conversations held in low tones are allowed.

• Be respectful to others

• Keep hands to yourself

• Use ruler at all times to mark where your book belongs on the shelf

• Line up at the circulation desk to check out materials

• Keep computer area clean (No food or beverages near computers)

• Because of the potentially disastrous effects on costly books, audio-visual
equipment and computers, eating is not permissible in the library. Food or drink brought into the library must remain in lunch sacks or backpacks, or will be held by the library staff until the student leaves the library.

• Noise or disruptive behavior by library patrons will result in a “friendly reminder.” If a second warning is warranted, the student may be asked to sit quietly without interruption. If behavior is sufficiently disruptive, the student may be asked to go to the office with a behavior slip. This policy is in place to ensure a library environment which supports the needs of students, staff and faculty.

• Because of classroom instruction duties and a sometimes hectic in-library reference program, library staff is unfortunately not able to monitor students who need to do homework, tests, computer, or any other individual projects in the library. Therefore parents, teachers, or staff members should understand that students who are sent to the library to do any, individual activities do so before or after school with the library staff members permission and supervision.
